Hurghada International Airport Expansion

31/03/2010

In late January 2010, the Egyptian Ministry of Aviation signed a contract worth USD 273 million for developing and modernizing Hurghada Airport on the Red Sea coast.

The project includes the building of a new 91,500-m² terminal, which should expand capacity to 7.5 million passengers per year. “The terminal was designed to ac-commodate the growing number of passengers who travel to this extraordinary tourist destination in our country,” said Ibrahim Manae, President of the Egyptian Holding Company for Airports & Air Navigation. According to Manae, Hurghada Airport is capable of receiving 5 million passengers per year, but traffic already exceeds that figure.

Construction will be implemented over the course of 36 months and will use cutting-edge technology. An automated luggage management system and another for integrated security will meet international requirements. “With this new terminal, we are hoping to set a new standard for the region,” said Medhat Hindawi, President of the Egyptian Airports Company, who added that passengers will have access to a wide variety of stores, duty-free boutiques and restaurants. “We are implementing this project in partnership with a large Saudi group.”

In recent years, a large number of expansion works have been carried out at Hurghada Airport, including the building of an arrivals hall costing USD 155 million.
